OMG!!...we are painting the kitchen cabinets!

A little background:  we bought our home 16 plus years ago...we did a mini kitchen redo right away...you know, wallpaper, new vinyl floor etc...then, 10 years ago, we decided to completely gut the 1963 kitchen and remodel...at that time, I LOVED the whole cottage white kitchen look but was afraid that it may be a trend and wanted a timeless look that would be appealing to all for resale.  We did the remodel ourselves, ripping out and putting in the new maple cabinets, putting in the hardwood flooring etc.  My favorite part of the kitchen has always been the eating area.  My hubby built a corner built in and made the wainscot boxes on the walls.  (this is the part of the kitchen you always see in my blog).. We decided to stay in this house and for the last couple of years I have considered painting the cabinets, especially after spending summers in the beach house with the white kitchen.   And so after way too much thinking and rethinking...we took the plunge...I had a complete anxiety attack the other day...I have painted tons of pieces of furniture, but this was different.  We were painting very nice maple cabinets that were fairly new. This is what I will be blogging about for the next few weeks...we are replacing the appliances and counter tops....so far we have sanded, primed and applied the first coat...hoping to get to the next one today...here's a sneak peek of what we've started....wish us luck and help me breathe.....

Our before photo...I'll show more in a future post once it's done...
This was about the time the anxiety attack hit...my poor husband...

Why is it that your kitchen cabinets reproduce once they are taken down???

They are EVERYWHERE!!!....I just have to remember to breathe and keep on painting..
please stay tuned and follow along with us on this journey....

  3. Hey, your house looks like mine, the white kitchen cabinets have taken over our lives! LOL
Thanks for stopping by and giving me encouragement, I know how you felt, when I first dipped the brush into the primer to paint I completely thought I was going to faint and I was only going to paint over orangey oak:)
    I'll be following along!

  6. Take deep breaths! I *just* finished my cabinet makeover project and have been where you are now! It will be oh-so worth it when you're done! Although I feel your anxiety - having cabinets all over the house is anxiety inducing! I was lucky to have a storage room in the basement as my Ground Zero for this project, but it's a pain, no matter what!

Take a look at my new and improved kitchen:

Can't wait to see yours when it's complete! It's going to be GREAT!! And worth every last bit of anxiety. ;-)

  12. Mariaelena they are going to look so great, you will forget all this~just like childbirth!! You are doing it the proper way by taking them all down, I kept mine in place because it was so much easier for me that way. My kitchen had the newer maple cabinets and even though they weren't bad, I couldn't wait to have white cabinets and I am thrilled with how it looks now. YOu will be too!

  13. How exciting! I know just how you feel, I have 3 year old cherry cabinets and I can't stop thinking about painting them. I haven't done it, I think I'm going to do the bathroom cabinet and see how that goes. Good luck to you, and thanks for visiting my blog!

  14. Oh, lucky you!! I am so excited for you that you are painting. I would so love to paint my orangey oak dated cabinets, but that will probably never happen. I am fixing to change out my knobs from shiny brass to something else and maybe that will help a little bit. Hopefully..

Can't wait to see yours when you are done.
