Blogger input wanted....PLEASE!!

Happy Thursday friends.....

I have the ultimate question for all of you....How bad will my kitchen cabinets chip if I paint them????....please be truthful...I can handle it!!!...lol......Although, I have painted so many furniture pieces over the years with great success, I have a great fear of chipping cabinets....I have shown you pics of my brand new white beach house kitchen....I LOVE it....At home in the "burb" house, we remodeled our kitchen ourselves almost 11 years ago....Although at that time, I LOVED white or antique white cabinets, I wasn't sure if the trend would continue (boy was I wrong) and thought for resale purposes, I'd be safer getting solid maple cabinets with a medium stain....I have been very happy with them, but my favorite part of the kitchen was and still remains the eating area where my husband built a corner cabinet and added molding on the walls...all of that is white...I LOVE that area and like the rest......Anyway, we are still living in that house and said maybe when we go to replace the counter tops, we would consider painting the cabinets....While I have been at the beach house this summer, we had a leak in our faucet in the "burb house" that ran down the back of the counter and settled into the seem of the beveled edge laminate....AND POP!!!!.....so it looks like the counter top time has come and I'm thinking of going ahead with the painting!!!!....unfortunately, I can't show you a pic of those cabinets now since I'm not there and don't have any on this blog....I'm 95% sure I'm going to paint and glaze them when I return in September, hoping your feedback will push us the last 5%....
THANKS SO MUCH AND REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU!!!
xoxo, Mariaelena...:)

Here are a couple pics I've shared in the past of the eating area of the kitchen...even after 11 years, I still LOVE  this part!!!

  1. Give them a light sand and prime them good and they shouldn't chip.

  2. Hey Mariaelena using a good primer and good paint should do the trick. I love this area too, the built-in is gorgeous! Martina

  3. Miss Mustard Seed just recently painted her cabinets and she did a how-to I think. I would do it. Your corner cabinet is beautiful.

  4. Do it, you'll love it!

I painted my kitchen cabinets almost 2 years ago and am thrilled with how they've held up. I sanded to rough up the old poly, used a really good primer, and then painted two coats of an interior wood and trim paint from Sherwin Williams. The only parts that have chipped have been on the bottom where my little one repeatedly slammed into them with a walking toy. Pretty sure no matter what finish had been on them, they would have chipped after that type of abuse :D And, it wasn't even bad enough for me to feel the need to touch it up. The semi gloss paint I used is perfect for wiping off any food that may splatter onto them as well. Here's a link to my kitchen post http://westermanfam.blogspot.com/2011/01/kitchen-makeover-i-love-you-paint.html

    Hope this helps!

  5. I painted mine 2 years ago. I have to say, they've held up quite well. I have had maybe 2 or 3 tiny chips.

My suggestion would be to take your time painting them. I have about 28 doors/drawers & it literally took me 3 months & that was painting every single day. (Don't fear, it was winter in NY, I was only paiting one door at a time!)

Anyway, I cleaned them really well with a degreaser. Then I sanded. Then I applied a good primer. Then I painted 2 coats of good paint. (I used Kim's tutorial from the Twice Remembered Cottage as my guide)

I couldn't be happier with how they turned out (and how they're holding up).

    Good luck!

  6. My kitchen cabinets were originally covered with really ugly laminate. I peeled all of the laminate off and had very sturdy pine cabinets. Instead of replacing them I sanded all the glue off and painted them. The doors were some kind of very thin pressboard so my hubby made me new doors. We did all this about 5 or 6 years ago and it has held up very well and very easy to clean. BTW... I LOVE your blog...just happened to stubble across it this morning. Good luck on the cabinets! 7. I painted mine a few weeks ago and so far so good! I scrubbed with sugar soap solution, then primed with tinted oil based zinsser and then two coats of my farrow and ball colour :) Good luck x
